This indicators shows the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 population due to homicides. Homicide consists of murder and non-negligent manslaughter, defined as the willful killing of one human being by another.
Why is this important?
According to County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, “High levels of violent crime (which includes homicides) negatively impact physical safety and psychological well-being. For example, residents can be deterred from pursuing healthy behaviors such as outdoor exercising. Evidence also suggests that increased stress levels may contribute to obesity prevalence, even after controlling for physical activity levels and diet.”
