Maternal & Infant Health
This dashboard includes data from three sources: The Bureau of Vital Statistics at the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), Claritas Consumer Profiles published by Claritas, LLC, and the Ohio Pregnancy Assessment Survey (OPAS) Dashboard.
The Bureau of Vital Statistics at the ODH tracks vital events across Ohio, including birth and death registrations. This data is available through published reports, and the Ohio Public Health Information Warehouse, a web application. The indicators in this dashboard from ODH are available at the state, region, and county levels.
Claritas Consumer Profiles are datasets maintained by the national market research company Claritas, LLC. These datasets contain information regarding consumer preferences and demographics. For this dashboard, Claritas Consumer Profiles were used to obtain information regarding utilization of obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) visits by female adults, as well as households receiving maternity care medical services. Claritas Consumer Profiles indicators in this dashboard are available for the following geographic levels: state, region, county, city (Census Place), zip code, and census tract.
Finally, the remainder of the indicators in this dashboard are drawn from OPAS, a statewide initiative that uses the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) methodology to collect information from Ohio residents who have recently given birth. The use of this methodology allows for comparison of Ohio OPAS data with data reported in other states across the U.S. OPAS has a particular focus on counties experiencing the greatest racial disparities in health outcomes, as identified by the ODH’s Ohio Equity Initiative. It is conducted each year by the ODH and the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) with the assistance of the Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center (GRC). Specifically, OPAS collects information reflecting maternal behaviors and experiences before, during, and after pregnancy, such as breastfeeding, safe infant sleeping practices, and maternal health conditions. OPAS indicators in this dashboard are available for Ohio and Cuyahoga County, and when available, are stratified by race/ethnicity, income, maternal age, and prenantal care insurance type.
